It seems like everyone wants to get on “the cloud” these days, and Dane-Elec is no exception.

I’m sure that most of you are familiar with how cloud systems work. You put your digital files on some secure cloud server somewhere, and then you can access them from anywhere there is an Internet connected computer.

What makes my-Ditto different is that you buy the Ditto box which has 1-4 TB of memory. They also come USB keys that allow the user to plug into any PC with a USB port and access all of their clouded information.

The clear benefits of these my-Ditto systems are backup, sharing files, and instant access to all your videos, songs, and everything else digital. As the company said: “my-Ditto is your new Media Center”.

There is also a my-Ditto application so you can access your my-Ditto cloud information on your tablet, mobile phone, and your computer.

The my-Ditto cloud computing system uses the highest encryption available, AES 256-Bit, to ensure data is always protected, no matter where you are.

You can check here for the various types of my-Ditto products. They range from $179 for 1 TB of memory, to $369.99 for 4TB. Considering that we are all cloud computing these days, you might as well jump on this train with something easy like this from Dane-Elec.

LG Optimus Pad LTE announced

Gadgets, January 20, 2012
1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

When it comes to the world of tablets, only two behemoths on the operating system front rule – Apple with their iPad range, and Google’s Android ecosystem that has seen (safe to say) hundreds of tablets hit the market already, with no signs of abating anytime soon. LG, who has churned out its fair share of Android-powered smartphones in the past (and even a 3D-capable handset), continues to explore the possibilities of Android on a tablet – hence rolling out their first LTE-capable tablet which is known as the Optimus Pad LTE.

Originally launched in South Korea, LG throws in LTE technology and a True HD IPS display that is guaranteed to wow whoever looks at it, and these are the the two features which have assisted LG in differentiating its latest smartphone, the Optimus LTE, from the rest of the competition.

Dr. Jongseok Park, President and CEO of LG Mobile Communications Company, says, “With tablets generating five times more traffic than the average smartphone, it’s not a huge jump to assume that tablet users need and want faster connectivity. The combination of LG’s LTE technology with the tablet form factor is a clear advantage for consumers who use a tablet as their primary consumption device when on the move.”

The LG Optimus Pad LTE will come with a 1280 x 720 True HD IPS display that is more or less guaranteed to wow whoever looks at it for the first time, and that display also works great in displaying your creativity as you snap photos of your surroundings with the 8-megapixel camera located at the back. This camera too, can shoot high definition video for posterity. Not only that, the Optimus Pad LTE is proud to be the world’s first tablet that supports an SD memory card of up to 32GB in size, so you need not worry about storage space. Other features include Android 3.2 Honeycomb as the operating system of choice, a 2-megapixel camera in front, and a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, all crammed into a body which measures a mere 9.34mm slim and tipping the scales at 479 grams.

Connectivity options include HDMI and DLNA, and you also have functions such as the Smart Movie Editor for editing pictures and videos in a jiffy. No idea on pricing or availability Stateside, although we do hope to see the LG Optimus Pad LTE make its way to the FCC – and soon.

I do have one particular concern though – such a display, coupled with LTE connectivity – will the 6,800mAh battery be able to hold up? After all, LTE-enabled devices are notorious for guzzling battery life like nobody’s business, and I am willing to go out on a limb to say that the LG Optimus Pad LTE will not be able to hold a candle to Apple’s iPad 2 in terms of battery life with LTE turned on all the time. What do you think?

Want the world to know how much of a geek you are? Well, you can always wear the Wi-Fi cufflinks on Monday, and since it is now Wednesday, try letting those who were not that observant a couple of days ago know that you are a true blue geek at heart, with the £139.99 iCufflinks holding the cuffs of your bespoked work shirt together. Made from the finest aluminum, each iCufflink will come with a LED power icon that is not static – no sir, it would be travesty for that to happen. Instead, these LED power icons would gently pulsate wherever you go, and needless to say, wearing this in the evening and at night would be the best times to make your statement of intent.

The iCufflinks also hold the distinction of being the world’s first open source cufflinks, simply because there are no others like it in the known market, and you can also download the schematics and CAD files, customizing the light patterns to pulsate according to your whims and fancy. Forget the Segway, ride a Trikke!

1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

I suppose that the Segway industry really has yet to take off, but I like the idea of personal mobility. I suppose I would have to group the Trikke with Segway-style products, but the Trikke has three wheels and not two self-balancing ones.

I got a chance to ride a Trikke at CES 2012, and I found that it was about as difficult to learn as a self-balancing motorcycle. At first, I was a little hesitant to make any sharp turns, but I found that with a little practice, the Trikke is highly maneuverable.

The maximum speed on it is 17 mph, but you’ll probably cruise along at about 12 mph. It is completely electirc with zero emissions, and is good for 24 miles per charge. The battery just plugs into the wall, and it is easily swappable.

The Trikke can fold down to a smaller shape, sort of like a stroller, so it is easily portable. It really does have a lot of personal mobility uses like security, tourism, and just getting around conveniently overall.

As you might have guessed, this fun doesn’t come cheap. The 36 Volt lite costs $1,299.99, the 3G Volt costs $1,899.99, and the 48 Volt costs $2,199.99. You can check out all the individual features on the official website.

Tritton SwitchBlade Wireless headset

Gadgets, January 15, 2012
1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

When it comes to video games, the Walkman generation (or should I say, iPod generation instead) grew up with earbuds, so there is nothing quite like experiencing in-game audio delivered straight into your ear canals. That sure beats most folks’ home computer or console sound system setup, as playing in a room still paves the way for outside interruptions to occur (which is not necessarily a bad thing, especially when your neighbors are trying to alert you that there is a fire in the kitchen), while wearing a pair of earbuds or headphones that is well insulated ensures you pay full attention to the game on hand – while listening for every move that your enemy makes.

The Tritton SwitchBlade Wireless headset intends to deliver great in-game audio for PS3 owners, where it will offer comfortable hands-free communication to boot. Flip-out the fold-away boom mic and the headset will power itself automatically, and when you are done, just place it on the included elegant docking base to stash it away neatly. Oh yeah, need we say it – this docking base also functions as a quick charger, making sure that the Tritton SwitchBlade is always available for duty whenever its services are required.

Not only that, it can pair with your PS3 console and smartphone simultaneously over Bluetooth, allowing you to seamlessly switch between online game chat and an incoming phone call with but a single touch of a button. Whenever there is an incoming call during your gaming session, the multifunction button opens up a host of options, where among them include being able to accept the call and place the PS3 chat on hold, to end the PS3 chat, or if it is that crazy ex-girlfriend demanding her clothes back which you have already donated to the Salvation Army, you can reject the call and resume gaming, without for a moment having to remove your eyes from the TV.

Not only does the SwitchBlade’s boom mic function as a convenient power button, it also houses integrated technology that is capable of detecting speech clearly. Should you happen to talk in loud environments, advanced noise reduction will stifle ambient sounds to make sure only your voice comes through on the other end of the line. Any takers? This should help boost up your gaming experience by some, PS3 owners.

Instant Flat Tire Sealer And Inflator

I have gone through my fair share of flat tires in the past 10 years since getting my license, and it is always a hassle to take out the replacement tire. Soiling my hands is not an issue, but to sweat in the tropical heat at the side of a dusty road while jacking up the car? That, I absolutely loathe. Still, an electronic jack would be useful, and just in case no motor workshops are open during that day, or I happen to be stranded in some backwater area, the $59.95 Instant Flat Tire Sealer And Inflator would definitely come in handy after some hard driving.

This device is capable of patching and inflating a flat tire in just 10 minutes, and you do not even need to lift the car or remove the tire. After all, it has a built-in compressor that pumps air and the included sealant through the flat tire’s air valve, making sure the tire is patched and inflated at the same time. Using a patented water-based nano-fiber sealant, it is capable of patching holes up to 1/4″ wide and a built-in pressure gauge will let you know whether the tire has been inflated to its optimal air pressure. Just bear in mind that this is not a permanent solution – it is recommended that you replace your patched tires, as they can be driven up to 125 miles.

BluCan Bluetooth Vibration Speaker and Speakerphone from GiiNii

Gadgets, January 12, 2012
1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

GiiNii, makers of the AudioBulb, had a new product on display at CES with the BluCan.

The BluCan is a Bluetooth speaker that is a little smaller than a can of soda. What you can’t see in this picture is that one twist will cause it to elongate so it is taller. The BluCan can seamlessly pair with Bluetooth enabled devices, in order to play your music off the headphones and on the go. When it is resting on a flat, solid surface, it becomes a 360 speaker capable of good range.

Of course, there are a lot of speakers that can do that. The BluCan has an integrated speaker, so you can actually use it as a phone when it is wirelessly connected. By the way, the Blucan has controls for play, pause, track forward, track backward, as well as answer, volume, and hang-up. So if your phone is charging across the room, you can still have the power of your speaker.

I’m not certain when the BluCan is due out, but it will be sometime this year. I also don’t have a price either. By the way, GiiNii also announced that the AudioBulb will be in a smaller size, in case you wanted to know.

Sony Crystal LED Display might be the future of TVs

1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

CES this year will see Samsung, LG, Panasonic and Sony battle it out where 55″ TVs are concerned, and while Samsung and LG have taken the OLED route, Sony decided to travel differently with their “Crystal LED Display” that is still in the prototype phase. This Full HD 55″ model is a self-emitting display that relies on Sony’s unique methods to mount ultrafine LEDs in each of the Red-Green-Blue (RGB) colors, which is equal in value to the number of pixels. We are talking about approximately six-million LEDs for Full HD here, and with the RGB LED light source being mounted directly on the front of the display, this move will dramatically improve the light use efficiency.

As a result, your eyes are greeted with images with strikingly higher contrast, regardless of whether you are in light and dark environments. Other features will include a wider color gamut, superb video image response time, and wider viewing angles when compared to existing LCD and plasma displays, not to mention paying less to the utility station at the end of the month thanks to its low power consumption. There is no exact release date for the Sony Crystal LED Display, and I am quite sure it is going to be expensive when it arrives.

Samsung Wi-Fi Video Baby Monitor debuts at CES 2012

Las Vegas is the landing strip for many a gadget at CES 2012, and Samsung does not want to miss out on the party with their spanking new Wi-Fi Video Baby Monitor which delivers industry leading design, technology and security in a single device. New parents might find it especially useful, while the older parents (or those who already have a few kids) will probably give a gander at this and go, “Meh!” while continuing their lives with their gut instinct (and experience, of course). Still, those who want to follow the adage that it is better to be safe that sorry might want to see what Samsung’s Wi-Fi Video Baby Monitor brings to the table (or home, rather).

This “third eye” of sorts might prove to be the ultimate solution in helping parents keep an eye out for their kids even when they are in a different room. Samsung wants to ensure that you have a pleasant experience right from the get go, by offering free apps for mobile platforms, including the Android and iOS operating systems, enabling parents to adoringly look at their little bundle of joy from the camera lens regardless of where they are – and using nearly all the common mobile devices that we tote around these days.

Samsung is said to spare no quarter with the Wi-Fi Video Baby Monitor by throwing in “the latest in wireless and IP technologies right in the palms of parents’ hands” in a manner that is simple and yet flexible. This IP-based camera will come with an effortless one-touch button that will seek out and automatically pair the device to a wireless home network in under half a minute without the need to install any software. You follow that up by register your camera with SamsungSmartCam.com, and from then on, you can view the person who matters to your from right in your home or anywhere in the world.

Just make sure you have a decent Internet connection before doing so. There is no limit to how many cameras that you want to add to an account, and in order to help you keep things organized, you can register, label and view live footage from each using their own login. The Wi-Fi Video Baby Monitor measures just 1.25″ thick and 3.15″ in diameter, and has a swiveling bracket so that you can mount the device to a wall. Non-visible infrared LEDs will pave the way for you to observe the latest addition to your family even in complete darkness, now how about that? Samsung will sell the Wi-Fi Video Baby Monitor for $149 a pop as it hits the market this March, and it can even automatically record video (640×480 / 30fps / H.264) when motion or sound is detected.

Vuzix Corporation’s SMART Glasses Technology unveiled

1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

When it comes to viewing your favorite movies, there is nothing quite like getting up close and personal with the movie in question. After all, why do you think that people prefer to go to the cinemas? I am not only referring to the superb audio system that cinemas deliver, there is also the issue of having “in your face” images and moments of action that cannot be replicated on a small screen. Trust me on this, when you have watched movies in IMAX such as Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, you would want to wish that most movies would be shot in IMAX after that. Vuzix knowns a thing or two about personal movie theaters, or rather, glasses that you wear where it projects an image size as though you were sitting a few get away from an 85” display. CES 2012 will see Vuzix Corporation introduce its SMART Glasses Technology.

Features of the Vuzix SMART Glasses Technology include a built-in HD display engine as well as waveguide optics which will literally break the boundaries of conventional optics and display solutions. Head Mounted Displays tend to be bulky in size, but Vuzix intends to change that with the SMART Glasses Technology, where it will deliver a compact display engine that is full well capable of high contrast and brightness even for outdoor use. All output will be relayed into a 1.4 mm thin polymer waveguide lens with input and output hologram structures on the surface that will squeeze the light down the waveguide, followed by two dimensional expansion of the image back into the user’s eye, so that the image created is mixed with that of the real world. And to think that this technology is capable of being stuffed into the temples and lenses of a conventional pair of eyewear!

Vuzix intends to roll out monocular and binocular SMART Glasses for the commercial, industrial and consumer markets by the time fall 2012 rolls around. No idea on pricing though.

Microsoft’s Flight Simulator is going to be free

1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

It seems like a lot of MMO games are now free to play now, and it looks like Microsoft is making one of their classic games free with Flight Simulator.

It will become available this Spring, and the name of it has been curtailed to simply “Flight”. I’m not certain what requirements your computer will have in order to play it, but I really hope that it is capable of the rich detail that more recent Flight Simulator games have given us.

In fact, I still remember when I first played Flight Simulator back in the mid-eighties. It was one of the first PC games that I ever played, and the graphics looked about as good as the Atari 2600. It had an instruction booklet that was over 100 pages long, and the controls were not very instinctual. Still, Flight Simulator really changed the world of PC simulation gaming as we know it, and I’m sure that it has been a cash cow for Microsoft for many years.

By the way, those who are connected with a free Games for Windows Live account will be able to have additional content which includes planes, missions, and more. You can also get in-line purchases such as aircraft, regions, as well as customization options .

Well, I look forward to many “Flights” of fancy, as this game could be my next distraction for the spring.

WowWee AppGear combines augmented reality with real toys

I’m sure that most of you coolest-gadgets readers are familiar with WowWee, as they make some really cool robot toys. Last year at CES, they unveiled the Cinemin Slice, and CES 2012 will be the year of the AppGear.

I have a video of it after the jump, and it apparently uses augmented reality apps for both iOS and Android, combined with physical toys. I’m not certain how it all works, but it could be the next generation of gaming.

After all, who doesn’t want to see their toys come to life? It looks like the Alien Jailbreak works by placing the alien jail toy in front of you and then shooting the aliens with an iOS or Android augmented reality application of some type.

There will be six of these games/apps available, which will be available sometime in early 2012. They will cost about $9.99 and $19.99, and include the aforementioned Alien Jailbreak, Zombie Burbs, and Elite Commander.

I’m sure that more games will come, especially with Star Wars franchise tie-ins. that’s just a theory, but who wouldn’t make more money for Lucas if they can?

60beat GamePad developed for the iPad

1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

I think we all know what is missing from iPad games, a button-munching controller. Yeah, how else can iPad gaming compete with the Xbox and Playstation if it can’t reproduce the experience that gamers are so used to?

I don’t know if you are like me, but I can’t stand to do controls on the touchscreen. I recently downloaded some nineties-era X-men game and found that moving around was difficult. Those control touchpads in the corner take a lot of getting used to.

Fortunately, there is the 60beat GamePad, which connects to iPads and iPhones via headphone jack. Somehow, signals are sent to through the 4-foot cable and the iPad user can play any games that are compatible. This makes iPad gaming a lot like console gaming.

In all honesty, I am surprised that Apple hasn’t come out with some official gaming controller for the iPad. Maybe they will totally optimize the iPad 3 for games, and then have an official iPad joystick. I wonder if I am giving Apple any smart ideas for making more money.

Perhaps the 60beat should come up with a way to make a Wiimote for the iPad. Then again, that Wii U looks like a tablet, and we will probably never see the Wiimote again after its release.

Other features of the 60beat includes an ergonomic design, dual joysticks, D-Pad, and 10 action buttons including 2 for joysticks. You should be able to purchase the 60beat iPad Gaming Accessory for about $49.99 on this website.

The Ice Hotels of Sweden and Romania

Since today is my 40th birthday, I have decided to celebrate by spending the night at a hotel. I can’t say that I would like to spend a night at this hotel, but it would make for an interesting story about the day I turned the big 4-0.

This ICEHOTEL is an annual project in the village of Jukkasjarvi. Every suite is specially made by artists who submit their ideas and have them selected by a jury. There are fifty artists in total that create the church, icebar, reception area, main hall and rooms. Of course, like all art, it is sadly temporary, and it melts every spring in the Torne River.

I thought that this ICEHOTEL looked familiar, and you might recognize a similar ice hotel in the James Bond movie Die Another Day. The movie was not filmed there, but it was the inspiration. After the jump, read more about another ice hotel in Romania.

The ice hotel in Romania is the Balea Lac Hotel of Ice in the Fagaras mountains. It has 10 double rooms with king size beds, with a temperature of -2 to 2 degrees Celsius.

Yeah, that is very cold, but it’s better than staying at the hotel made entirely of fire.

Triangle Tablet, as satirized on “The Office”, could actually be a reality

1 Point2 Points3 Points4 Points5 Points6 Points7 Points8 Points9 Points10 Points (No Ratings Yet)

Some of you might remember when we covered how the popular television show The Office (American version) satirized PC tablet culture as Dwight Schrute introduced a triangular tablet. Apparently, someone wants to harness “The Power of the Pyramid” as they are trying to develop an actual triangle tablet.

The man is Eric Calisto, and apparently he was inspired by the aforementioned episode of The Office. You can read about his progress at Kickstarter, and he wants about $25,000 of funding. At this writing, only four people have pledged about $28.

I noticed the picture on Kickstarter isn’t really of a triangular tablet, but only a triangle. Considering that Kickstarter is made for concept technology looking for funding, I’m surprised that there isn’t a better mock-up as proof of concept. Perhaps this guy needs to borrow some props from NBC.

If you want to try can get on board with this possible new tablet fad, head over to Kickstarter and pledge now. The first individual who gives $5,000 will actually get to pick the name for the tablet.

I’m not planning on sending an amount that large, but I do have a few suggestions for names: the Isosceles, the Equilateral, and the Scalene. Oh wait, those are just triangle types, and I can’t help but wonder type of triangle this tablet will be. Of course, I wonder if there is even a future for a triangular tablet, because I want to instinctively say “no”.

Rollerphone projects the time on the wrist, and a pull-out transparent screen for phone calls

This is the Rollerphone, and it is currently a concept watch/telephone, but can do two things which are quite revolutionary.

The first is the pull-out screen which is good for making and taking phone calls. You can see in the image here that it is located on the back of the watch, and the user puts it to their ear to conveniently speak and listen.

As for where the front of the watch, the time is projected on the user’s wrist with a tiny projector. I have an image of that after the jump if you want to see how that works.

I suppose that selling a phone or a watch is difficult, as most features have been done before, but either of the two that I would have described would revolutionize either industry.

Especially the pull-out transparent screen. I’ve heard that technology has been under development by many big electronics companies for quite some time. If so, then I would imagine that the rollout screen has some other uses than just a phone dialer.

Yes, once those rollout display screens get developed, then we will see a lot of technology that will be similar to the Rollerphone. Of course, this is really just a concept, at least for now.

For those of you who want to make sure that your upper body gets the proper amount of workout so that ladies at the beach will be impressed when next summer rolls around, you might want to check out alternatives to push ups, bench presses and lifting weights. The $59.95 Isometric Resistance Upper Body Strengthener might be a decent option, where it will offer a muscle-strengthening upper body workout which does not cause any unnecessary strain on your joints. All you need to do is pull or push on the static handlebars while making sure you do not move your upper body joints, and it will be the equivalent of strength-enhancing resistance as free weights, albeit sans the strain or detrimental impact.

This is also touted to be one of the more ideal ways to improve bone density and mitigate muscle loss. Heck, it even comes with a programmable timer and automatically monitors the applied force and displays the readings on the integrated backlit LCD, so that you are able to see just whether you have achieved your goals or not, as well as chart your progress. You can enjoy up to 23 exercises that strengthen and tone the arms, shoulders, chest, and back, and make sure that there is always an extra 9-volt battery on hand.
